At its [104th Meeting](https://www.iattc.org/en-US/Event/DetailMeeting/Meeting-IATTC-104), held in Lisbon, Portugal from 31 August–4 September 2026, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission ([IATTC](https://www.iattc.org/)) adopted [Resolution C-26-08](https://www.iattc.org/GetAttachment/52911667-0ecd-4a09-81b2-f70cedba5fb8/C-26-08_Ecosystem-approach-EN.pdf) “On the progress of implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM)”, committing to progressively integrate ecosystem considerations into the conservation and management of tuna and associated species in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

“The resolution recognizes that fisheries do not operate in isolation.  Environmental variability, climate-related changes, habitat degradation, marine pollution, and interactions with associated and dependent species can all influence the health and productivity of marine ecosystems and the fisheries that depend on them.

The new framework and workplan provide a pathway for bringing this broader ecosystem information more systematically into IATTC’s scientific and management processes. T his marks an important step in moving Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM)from concepts and tools towards practical implementation within tuna regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs).

The decision also builds on years of work to develop ecosystem indicators, strengthen science–management dialogue, and explore practical ways of using ecosystem information to support fisheries management decisions, areas closely aligned with the work of the Common Oceans Tuna Project.”

The IATTC is responsible for the conservation and management of tuna and associated species throughout the eastern Pacific Ocean, a region extending from the western coastline of the American continent to the central Pacific (150 degrees west), and from Canada in the north to Chile in the south.

The Resolution shall enter into force on 01 January 2027 and shall remain in force unless amended or replaced by the Commission.  Read more [here](https://www.fao.org/in-action/commonoceans/newsroom/news-and-stories/news-detail/iattc-commits-to-integrating-ecosystem-considerations-in-fisheries-management-decisions/en).
